Burning your own CD wedding favors has been a popular choice for many couples. However, it is not without its pitfalls!
Firstly you need to consider what to put on it. Some choose the playlist for their wedding reception, whilst others choose songs that have special meaning to them. Whatever you choice I would suggest choosing a broad range of songs from across many genres so that there is something for everyone on it. And as wedding favors are supposed to a personal gift with a touch of your own personalities in them, try to include a few songs that have some meaning to yourselves.
There is of course the problem of copyright. In recent years burning CD’s at home & file sharing online has resulted in many people being taken to court over copyright issues. It is still something a grey area as to whether or not burning CD’s to give as wedding favors is in breach of copyright. It may be better to find songs which are out of copyright, but then this will limit your choice.
Another problem is the sheer number of CD’s you may have to burn. If you regular burn disks at home you may be all too aware of how long it can take to complete to just one, let alone a couple of hundred! If you don’t have the time or the patience to do them yourself, then look around for a professional to do it for you. They will be able to do it much quicker & probably produce better sound quality as well.
Finally you will need to consider how you present your CD’s & the design of the cases. Most will be familiar with the plastic cases, known as jewel cases, usually seen encasing a CD. Most blank CD’s don’t come with these days, particularly if you buy them in bulk. But if you do get the cases you can make up artwork to in the front, back & down the spine of the case.
Many couples opt for simple card sleeves which they can design themselves. Have a look on the internet for some which you can run through your printer or for a template so your can cut out your own.
When it comes to design, keep them in a similar vein as your wedding stationery, include your names & wedding date & a track list on the back. This way they will coordinate with your overall wedding scheme.
If you decide to chance the copyright laws & make your own CD wedding favors, you will be creating something that is unique & personal to you. Music is a great gift idea & this type of favor always has appeal.
